Our body contains 13-30 mg of selenium. The selenium belongs to mineral substances called essential trace elements, which are found in the most vital parts of our body platelet gland liver kidneyshearted muscles.
What does the Selenium do for the body and why is it so important?
Selenium is an antioxidant that has the function of protecting and preventing cells from oxidative stress.
What other essential functions and tasks does Selenium contribute to our body:
- Helps Maintain normal hair and nails
- Helps Normal functioning of the immune system
- Normal functioning of the thyroid gland
- Protect cells from oxidative stress
- Protect cells from oxidative stress
Selenium is bound to the proteins in our body, which are part of the body’s own antioxidant defense. An example of an antioxidant produced in the body that needs selenium to function is glutathione peroxidase.
Glutathione peroxidase is necessary to prevent the fat in the body from harnessing (oxidation /degradation). Therefore, ingestion of selenium can help protect and prevent cells from oxidative stress.
